The trilogy basically plots the evolution of human society over the course of centuries, as we are provided an nigh-endless conflict with physically inferior enemies who are inhuman enough for us not to feel guilty about killing them. Realizing what they have discovered in humanity, they recruit humans to their cause just as the other side of the conflict shows up. a relentless enemy, stumbling upon Earth in a desperate quest to find any civilization that can aid them, especially species that can bring themselves to fight at all - many alien races are incapable of violence except in purest self-defense.

The series starts with a federation of alien races, losing a war vs. The basic premise of the novels is that humanity is a species not only more inherently more violent that other races(not that uncommon in sci-fi), but physically superior as well faster, stronger, etc. I was browsing r/writingprompts, and there was a prompt that reminded me of this trilogy, published in the early 90's.
